Treatment for vertebral compression fractures (VCF) includes both conservative non-surgical and surgical options. Conservative treatments include bed rest, analgesia for pain, bracing for support, and time for healing. Traditionally, surgery had been indicated when conservative treatments failed to provide adequate pain relief. The utility of major posterior or posterior/anterior reconstruction was limited by the associated high risk of morbidity in elderly patients and the potential for fixation problems in osteoporotic bone. With the introduction of minimally invasive techniques, early surgical intervention is now indicated in patients with VCF due to osteoporosis to prevent further vertebral collapse. In patients with VCF, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty offer minimally invasive treatment options. Click below to learn more about vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty in patients with VCF.
